A TALE OF 2 SEQUELS
I had thought of writing this post a few days ago. This is about 2 malayalm movies which i saw within the space of a month-SAGAR ALIAS JACKY and 2 HARIHAR NAGAR.The similarity about them is that both are sequels of 2 super hit films released long back. The similarity ends there.Watching SAJ was a torture wheras wachin 2HN was pure fun.
I believe the main thing to b kept in mind while attempting a sequel is that you should not change the basic nature of the lead characters .But in SAJ,the lead character is not the same man we saw in irupathaam noottaandu 22 yrs back.In IN,Sagarwas not a super human. He was a man who used his brain more than his muscles. But the hero of SAJ is a superhuman. He uses his muscles. He can fight with villains singlehandedly.None of the bullets that the villains fire touch him. This movie has nothing to do with the first part. The makers could've easily made a new movie with a new character. But they decided to use the same old character to generate hype.Unfortuantely, fools like me who expected another irupathaam noottaandu fell into their trap. There is no story whatsoever. The dialogues r poor.S.N.Swamy has shown once again that he is outdated. He is still writing movies for the audience in the 80s.Amal Neerad, who promised a lot with his directorial debut Big B has tried to create another Big B.The shots, the framing and a lot more r exactly similar to Big B.Mohanlal looks like an inflated baloon. The audience were booing when he was romancing Bhavana, who is young enough to be his daughter. In IN,his pair was Urvasi, who was then much older than what Bhavana is now.Wonder when our superstars will stop romancing girls not even half their age.Another big disappointment is Jagathy.I've been seeing Jagathy in movies since my childhood, but i have never seen him failing to make audience laugh.I dont wanna write more about this movie. In short, one of the biggest disappointments i've had in recnet times.
Now coming to the 2nd movie 2Harihar Nagar.the biggest strength of the movie is that although the heroes are no longer young(unlike in SAJ,where the hero pretends to b the same 27 yr old he was 22 yrs back),their basic nature is unchanged.Another thing about the movie is that unlike SAJ,this cannot be made as a new movie. There are a lot of references to the old movie(Maya, the bag containing cash) etc.Above all,the movie is a laugh riot. The viewer is never bored.Lal shows that he is still a master craftsman. His command over script and direction is impeccable.i hope he directs more movies in future.
I just wanna say this 2 all who r aspiring to make sequels of super hit movies. Please make the sequels only if its absolutely necessary.i e pls do attempt a sequel only if it has something to do with the original.Otherwise, pls dont attaempt it.Plese dont make us hate urfavourite onscreen characters. We dont want more SAJs,we need more 2HNs.

IPL SEASON 2
The IPL Season 2 begins today and like all cricket fans,i am also excited.Actually,a couple of years back,i was against the concept of 20-20 cricket.i didnt like it.i felt test cricket and ODIs are the only forms of cricket that was watchable.i felt 20-20 was a game for sloggers.how wrong i was.i started liking 20-20 since the 20-20 world cup.i started watching a couple of games a i slowly became addicted to this format of the game.since then,i've been very keen on watching 20-20 cricket.my initial assumption that it was a game of sloggers was changed.
The IPL however did not create much interest in me when it was first announced, even though it was after the T20 WC.i felt it was some sort of a circus, with players from different countries playing for the same team.i felt the intensity while representing one's country will not b there.again,i was wrong.i could see some of the most entertaining cricket thorugh IPL Season1.players from same country represented different teams, players from different countries represented the same team.it was real fun.after a couple of games,i became a die hard fan of IPL and i was so sad when it came to an end.The happy news is that IPL is back again. All though the venue has shifted from Indian to South Africa,i hope the intensity will not be reduced and i hope to see some great matches like what i saw last year.I wish the IPL Season 2 all the best

SURYA-The Journey From Nerukku Ner to Ayan
Today i saw the movie' Ayan' from tcr Sapna. It was yet another usual commercial movie. The only saving grace of the movie was Surya.
Once i got out of the theatre i started thinking abt surya and his rise in tinsel town.Surya started his career in 'Nerukku Ner' directed by Vasanth. He was 1 of the 2 heroes(the other 1 being Vijay).I didnt see the movie then, but i fwelt that he was yet another chocolate hero.lean, good looking, lacked acting skills, i thought.I didnt find anything special in his subsequent movies. After a few movies,he got a chance to act in 'Nanda' directed by Bala. When i saw the movie from Coimbaotre,i knew that my initial assumptions were wrong. He had potential.I knew he wudnt end up as another chocolate hero, but i never thought he wud rise so far.Nanda was not a big hit,but his acting was appreciated.Nanda was followed by Unnai Ninaithu,Mounam Pesiyadhey and Sri.None of them were big hits. Then i heard that he was doing a movie with 'Minnale' director Gautham Menon.
A few months later,i saw the trailer of 'Kakka Kakka' in TV.I knew instantly that THIS WAS THE MOVIE.Even before the movie was released i felt Surya's career was going to touch new heights. When the movie was released i watched it first day.I was completely taken by surprise.I still believe AnbuSelvan of KK is his best performance till date and i beleive no other actor can do that role so well.KK was followed by B ala's 'Pithamagan'.It was totally different from Nanda and KK.Throught Pithamagan,he showed that he could handle comedy also with ease.Next was 'Perazhakan' which was followed by Mani Ratnam's 'Aayudha Ezhuthu'.I expected wonders when this young actor joined hands with the ace director and he didnt disappoint.AE was followed by 'Mayavi'.Mayavi was an unbearable movie. But i loved the way Surya portrayed his character.

After 'Mayavi',Surya signed A.R.Murugadoss' 'Ghajini'.It was a role which Ajith had rejected.'Ghajini' was a super hit and needless to say,Surya performed both the roles(that of a lover and short term memory loss patient) wonderfully. After the movie,he was compared to big stars like Vijay,Ajith and Vikram.(Recently Aamir Khan remade the movie to hindi.I felt Aamir did a very good job.But despite Aamir's abilities and experience,i felt Surya did a better job). After Ghajini though, he acted in some rubbish movies like Aaru,Sillunu Oru Kaadhal and Vel.None of these movies set Box Office on fire, but Surya did a commendable job in them.
Then came his next big step-Gautham's 'Vaaranam Aayiram'.He played a dual role in the movie-that of a father and a son.HE played the role of father brillaintly, but i felt it was the other role which was even tougher. He had to do the roles of a school boy, ollege student, lover, musician, drug addict, army officer etc.He did all with trmemndous ease.He even got a six-pack abs just for ONE SCENE.What a commitment.I expected somehting special in his new film 'Ayan',but i am disappointed.I want him to do Nandas,KKs,Pithamagans,AEs,Ghajinis and VAs,not Mayavis,Aarus,Vels,Soks and Ayans.I am sure he will do more brilliant roles.I wish him all the very best.Monday, March 30, 2009
